We have recently had a paper published in African Journal of Marine Science (see attached) on the ichthyofauna of the new Pondoland MPA. There were no new species discovered but a couple of range extensions which were quite interesting. We have another paper in press with the same journal documenting the invertebrate and algal biodiversity of the region. Independent environmental consultant CCA Environmental, in association with Nomi Muthialu & Associates, has completed the final scoping study for the controversial N2 Wild Coast project, which would connect major cities in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal along a 560-km route.
This report, which forms part of the second environmental-impact assessment (EIA) study undertaken on the project after a previous record-of-decision had been overturned following claims of a lack of independence, would now be submitted to environmental authorities for consideration and acceptance. In compiling these comments, SWC makes reference to the Independent Review of the Record of Decision issued by the DEAT in 2005 which clearly highlighted the shortcoming of the previous EIA. While the previous EIA was overturned on the basis of lack of independence, the Independent Review listed numerous other shortcomings in the previous EIA process, any of which, individually or collectively, could also have been legitimate reasons for the EIA being turned down. One therefore has to ask, to what extent does the current DSR process provide a basis for the new EIA to overcome the shortcomings inherent in the previous EIA? [Read more…]
