ABOUT US

The South African Pondoland Wild Coast is under threat from the rerouting of the  N2 highway, and proposals for open cast dune mining by an Australian mining company.

Sustaining the Wild Coast (SWC) is a registered NGO committed to community based, sustainable solutions to local economic development. SWC works closely with Wild Coast communities to promote socially and ecologically appropriate local solutions to local problems.

Mission Statement

  •  SWC supports any initiatives to develop environmentally sustainable, community based, environmentally sound economic activities in the region.
  •  SWC supports the rerouting of the N2 away from the sensitive ‘Greenfield`s’ section of the coastline that lies between Port St Johns and Port Edward, to a less ecologically  sensitive route.
  •  SWC is opposed to any open cast mining proposals or other environmentally unsustainable economic activities along the Wild coast.
  •  SWC calls for a moratorium on any decisions about the proposed mining, the N2 toll extension and other socially and environmentally  inappropriate projects along the Wild Coast region until all possible alternatives are thoroughly investigated.
