Reactive Campaigns - Advocacy
SWC helps Wild Coast communities with advocacy, legal representation and specialist advice where necessary.
We are currently assisting local tribal authorities and communities with resources to legally challenge the government's approval of the N2 'Wild Coast' Toll road as well as proposals to mine the coastal dunes of the northern Wild Coast, between Mtentu and Mzamba, for heavy minerals.
The outcomes of these two ongoing legal battles have huge implications for North Pondoland Wild Coast communities. The Mpondo have a cultural sense of identity and lifestyles that are closely linked to the local landscape. Many residents also rely heavily on natural resources for subsistance. Local people argue that developments like the N2 'Wild Coast' extension and open cast dune mining will destroy the close cultural ties between community and landscape, and undermine local visions for community driven development.
